Job Description

ABOUT iCIVICS

At iCivics, we are deeply committed to elevating the importance of civics in our schools. We are a fast-growing civic education nonprofit founded by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. Our mission is to collaborate with teachers and leaders across the country to re-imagine civic education for American democracy. We champion equitable and nonpartisan civic education while providing engaging resources that empower educators in the essential task of preparing young people for lifelong civic engagement.

In partnership with iCivics, nearly 9 million students learn about our government, history, the rule of law, and civic issues. We make civic education relevant to new generations of Americans through online games and innovative classroom resources available at no cost. Our reach is substantial: 156,000 educators across all 50 states are registered with iCivics and we are growing by leaps and bounds. Student engagement is at the heart of the iCivics story: our games have been played by students a staggering 148 million times.

We’re not only the leading provider of civic education, but also working to catalyze a movement to prioritize civic education in the United States and demonstrate its impact in sustaining and strengthening our nation’s constitutional democracy. This new role reflects iCivics’ commitment to meeting the needs of educators to grow and develop. It also reflects the need to improve the quality of history and civics instruction to meet the needs of our nation.

The Opportunity

The iCivics Chief Learning Services Officer (CLSO) will be an innovative leader charged with establishing and leading our professional services workstream. Reporting to the Executive Director, the CLSO will be a visionary who understands the K–12 education market and iCivics’ strategic direction, making purposeful connections between our people, products, and services to amplify the impact of our efforts.

The CLSO will lead iCivics’ overall design and operational support of the professional learning products and services strategy while ensuring that all products are aligned with the company’s mission, vision, and values. A successful CLSO will model the way as a product evangelist and entrepreneur—a leader who is capable of spotting trends and setting goals for years ahead. To realize iCivics’ vision, our CLSO will collaboratively design and implement systems to deliver efficient and effective professional learning, turning concepts into sustainable models to improve the quality of civics instruction across the nation. Inherent to the success of the CLSO will be the ability and experience to amplify capacity to drive systems change in schools, districts, and states in support of our mission to reimagine civic education for American democracy.

Professional learning is an area of increased focus for iCivics. At this stage of organizational development, the CLSO will lead the development of service “products” as part of a focused integrated strategy for schools and districts with the ultimate goal to improve the quality of instruction in civics and history education. This business line will offer on-ramps to grow the adoption of inquiry-based pedagogy while respecting where educators are today. Currently, iCivics provides roughly three lines of professional services designed directly for educators: (1) state-based “train-the-trainer” professional learning in two states; (2) implementation support in six states for our new grade 8 U.S. History core curriculum; and (3) a series of product-related virtual professional learning opportunities. The CLSO will leverage the instructional materials and professional development talent at iCivics to further develop learning services at the school and district levels. They will be responsible for the development of the business line, including market research; pilot tests; product design and development; pricing and decisions around going to market, as well as sales.
