TouchDesigner Artist / Experience Developer

Location: Remote or Portland, OR (preferred for direct hardware access)

Engagement Type: Contract, project-based

Reports To: Technical Director, Labs

Overview

Downstream is seeking contract-based TouchDesigner artists and developers whose artistic vision and technical skills merge to create extraordinary interactive experiences. As part of our project teams, you'll collaborate with designers, engineers, and strategists to deliver installations across Fortune 500 headquarters, cultural institutions, and landmark spaces.

This is not a full-time employment position. Engagements will be structured around specific projects, with timelines, deliverables, and compensation defined per contract.

Role & Responsibilities

• Develop generative and interactive systems in TouchDesigner for client projects.
• Implement projection mapping, LED systems, and large-scale display environments.
• Integrate live data, audio-visual feeds, and sensor-driven interactivity.
• Prototype, optimize, and troubleshoot real-time performance for installations.
• Collaborate with creative and technical teams to deliver seamless solutions.
• Support on-site installations and provide client-facing support as required by project scope.

What You Bring

• Proficiency in TouchDesigner with a portfolio demonstrating real-time visuals and interactive installations.
• Creative background in visual arts, new media, or related field combined with technical problem-solving skills.
• Experience with node-based programming and generative design principles (including Python).
• Strong browser-based development with experience creating creative in-browser experiences.
• Knowledge of projection mapping, LED systems, or display technologies.
• Understanding of audio-visual integration and working with live data feeds.
• Ability to optimize real-time performance and troubleshoot on-site.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills for cross-disciplinary work and client interactions.
• Flexibility for travel when projects require on-site installation.
• Bonus: Experience with motion capture, sensor integration, or custom hardware interfacing.
