POSITION SUMMARY:

The Atlanta University Center – Robert W. Woodruff Library is pleased to offer a paid student internship opportunity in the Archives Research Center for Summer 2025. This program provides the intern with a comprehensive understanding of contemporary trends, practices, and challenges in special collections management, with a particular focus on works of art within special collections.

Throughout the internship, the intern will have the opportunity to contribute suggestions and provide input on the storage and display of the Library’s art collection. Additionally, the AUC Woodruff Library will offer supplementary learning experiences in related fields such as art storage, art collection management, and exhibit design.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the supervision of the Head of Processing and Collections Management, the intern may be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Conducting an inventory of the Library’s art collection
  • Researching artists and collections related to the Library’s art holdings
  • Proposing a revised schedule for the display and exhibition of the Library’s art collection
  • Visiting on-campus museums, including the Spelman Museum of Fine Art and the Clark Atlanta University Art Museum, to gather further insights

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated interest in librarianship, archives, or curatorial studies, with a focus on art curation, exhibit design, and/or art history
  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an undergraduate program (any field)
  • Coursework in curatorial studies and/or art history is preferred
  • Preference will be given to students enrolled in the AUC Art History and Curatorial Studies Collective
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

  • Strong knowledge of 20th-century African American history, literature, and culture is highly desirable
  • Ability to perform physical tasks related to the archival environment

SALARY & BENEFITS:

  • The 8-week internship will run from June 2, 2025, to August 1, 2025.
  • A stipend of $2,500 will be provided.
  • Room and board are not included. Candidates must be local to Atlanta, GA, for the duration of the internship.
