Church Publishing Incorporated is a multi-market publisher of trade books for general readers in leadership, spirituality, social justice, inspiration, wellness, and self-help, as well as academic and liturgical works and for the Episcopal Church.

The Editor will acquire and edit books across imprints (Morehouse Publishing and Church Publishing). This position will generate ideas, reach out to potential authors and literary agents and work with partners in line with the overall identity of the publishing house. This position will work closely with authors to develop content and shepherd projects from acquisition to publication and beyond, ensuring a successful publication defined by revenue goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Effective performance of the essential functions of this position requires regular in-person, on-site interaction with colleagues, both for purposes of relationship building and meaningful collaboration.
  • Acquire and edit 12 trade and professional books a year.
  • Developmentally edit manuscripts across lists.
  • Prepare necessary editorial and acquisitions packets including descriptions, selling points and comparative titles. Write copy.
  • Adhere to metadata guidelines in the presentation of information to sales accounts.
  • Ensure on time delivery of manuscripts to production, meeting publication schedules.
  • Manage permissions as necessary.
  • Manage author communications, negotiating CPI needs.
  • Facilitate contractual agreements.
  • Work closely with marketing to maximize sales and brand.
  • Present at sales conferences and attend conferences and book fairs as necessary.
  • Knowledge or interest in faith-based publishing a plus.

  • Network in publishing, including established relationships with literary agents.
  • Experienced in book acquisitions and manuscript editing.
  • Excellent communication skills-written, oral, editing, and presentation.
  • Must have the ability to travel as needed.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • B.S. or B.A. required, advanced degree in related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of editorial experience in a book publishing company

Extensive use of a computer keyboard is a demand of the position to perform the essential functions of this job successfully.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Currently, we have a hybrid work environment that requires working in CPI's office Tuesdays through Thursdays and the flexibility to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays. Salary Range: $65,000 - $85,000
