Overview Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBPO) U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) offers those interested in a career in law enforcement an opportunity to work with a highly trained professional team dedicated to protecting America. This is a position within the Federal Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) profession. Responsibilities Enforce customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations. Facilitate the flow of legitimate trade and travel. Conduct inspections of individuals and conveyances. Determine the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States. Prevent illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods, as well as the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband. Duty Locations Duty locations are subject to vacancies and operational needs. You may be offered a duty location in another geographic location within the United States if your initial choice is not available at the time of final offer. Locations offered are based on operational and mission requirements and critical agency hiring needs for entry-level CBPOs. Salary and Benefits Annual Base Salary for newly appointed CBPOs varies (GS-9: $61,111 - $124,443 per year). Locality pay varies by duty location. A fully trained CBPO is eligible for up to $45,000 in overtime pay in addition to the starting salary. Grade level progression: GS-5, GS-7, GS-9, GS-11, GS-12. Promotions are based on service and agency discretion after 52 weeks in each grade level. Benefits include health, dental, annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan (retirement plan). Location Incentives If you accept certain duty locations, you may be eligible for recruitment incentives of 10%, 15%, or 25% of your salary for the first three to four years of employment, in addition to overtime pay. Qualifications To qualify for the GS-9 level you may meet one of the following: Experience: At least one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level, involving detaining or arresting violators, enforcing laws related to importing/exporting or international shipping, using intelligence techniques for threat assessment, and conducting law enforcement interviews. Education Substitution: Master’s degree or two or more years of graduate education, or an LL.B./J.D. from an accredited institution. Combination: A combination of specialized experience and graduate education. Other requirements include U.S. citizenship, residency, age restrictions, and veterans’ preference eligibility. Formal training includes a paid pre-academy orientation and a 101-day CBP Field Operations Academy program at FLETC, with Spanish training for southern border, Miami, or Puerto Rico duty locations where applicable.
