Overview Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBPO) U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) offers those interested in a career in law enforcement an opportunity to work with a highly trained team protecting America. As a Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBPO), you will join a large workforce that safeguards the borders, deters illicit activity, and supports the nation’s economic prosperity. Being a CBPO is a role within the Federal Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) profession. Responsibilities Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations. Facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel. Conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances. Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States. Preventing illegal entry and the illicit smuggling of goods and drugs. Duty Locations You will be asked to provide a preference for one of the mission-critical locations. Incentives may be available for some locations. Preferred duty locations (examples): Nogales, and San Luis, AZ; Calexico, Los Angeles, Otay Mesa, San Francisco, San Ysidro, Tecate, CA; Washington, DC; Miami and Orlando, FL; Atlanta, GA; Hagatna, Guam; Honolulu, HI; Chicago, IL; Calais, Fort Kent, Houlton, Jackman, Madawaska, Van Buren, and Vanceboro, ME; Detroit and Port Huron, MI; Baudette, Grand Portage, International Falls, and Warroad, MN; Del Bonita, Morgan, Raymond, Roosville, and Wild Horse, MT; Newark, NJ; Alexandria Bay, Buffalo, Champlain, Massena, Ogdensburg, Queens, and Trout River, NY; Dunseith, Hansboro, Neche, Pembina, and Portal, ND; Philadelphia, PA; San Juan, PR; El Paso and Houston, TX; Christiansted, U.S. Virgin Islands; Beecher Falls, Derby Line, Highgate Springs, Norton, and Richford, VT; Blaine Oroville, Seattle and Sumas, WA. Locations offered are based on operational and mission requirements and hiring needs for entry-level CBPOs as determined by the CBP Office of Field Operations (OFO). Salary, Incentives, and Benefits Annual Base Salary for newly appointed CBPOs varies as follows: GS-9: $61,111 - $124,443 per year Locality pay varies by duty location. Note: A fully trained CBPO is eligible for up to $45,000 in overtime pay in addition to the starting salary. Grade level progression is GS-5, GS-7, GS-9, GS-11, and GS-12. Promotions occur after successful completion of 52 weeks in each grade level, at the agency’s discretion. Officers are eligible for federal employment benefits including health and dental insurance, paid annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan (retirement plan similar to a traditional and Roth 401(k)). Location Incentives Some duty locations offer recruitment incentives: 15% or 25% of annual salary for the first 3–4 years, plus any applicable overtime. Experience: At least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level, including: Detaining suspected violators and/or arresting violators using proper law enforcement methods. Enforcing laws and regulations related to importing, exporting, and international shipping to/from the United States. Utilizing intelligence techniques and behavior analysis to identify threats and perform risk assessments. Conducting interviews in a law enforcement capacity to gather information for appropriate action. Education Substitution: Master’s degree or two or more years of graduate education; or an LL.B. or J.D. from an accredited institution. Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of specialized experience and graduate-level education. Other Requirements Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen. Residency: Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years. Age Restriction: Age restrictions apply per law enforcement retirement provisions; there are exceptions for certain federal positions. Veterans’ Preference: May be eligible for Veterans Recruitment Appointment (VRA). Formal Training: Paid pre-academy orientation for ~2 weeks at home port, followed by a 101-day CBP Field Operations Academy at FLETC in GA. Some duty locations require online Spanish training.
