POSITION TITLE: Archives Intern (Part-Time)

SUMMARY:

AIP is looking for two part-time Archives Interns to join our Niels Bohr Library & Archives (NBLA) team in a grant funded initiative to draw attention to the key role that women have played and are playing in advancing the physical sciences by providing better access to archival collections that highlight the contributions and work of women.

The Archives Intern will work with NBLA staff to support core activities of this project, including working with archivists to ingest, accession, and process physical and digital manuscript materials, photographs, and archival collections. Duties also include rehousing physical collection materials and arranging digital collection materials as needed, metadata creation (including MARC catalog records), finding aids, and other metadata projects to support the NBLA digital repository (

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Rehouse archival collections in acid-free folders and boxes.
  • Assist in series arrangement of archival collections.
  • Follow workflows for ingest and upload of digital collection materials.
  • Create descriptive metadata at the item and collection level including MARC records, EAD finding aids, and photograph descriptions.
  • Engage in outreach activities to promote the project in NBLA communication channels and social media.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Library Science or Archival Studies and/or previous archival experience.
  • Students currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program in Archival Studies or relevant field preferred.
  • Experience with cataloging and metadata standards such as MARC, DACS, EAD, Dublin Core, and LCSH preferred.
  • Proofreading and research skills; excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines.

COMPENSATION: $15-$19 per hour, up to 20 hours per week.
Interns may work between 10-20 hours per week depending on academic enrollment status (up to 10 hrs/week while actively enrolled in classes; 10-20 hrs/week if not currently enrolled or post-graduation.)

The team works in a flexible, hybrid schedule and reports to our offices in College Park, Maryland and Washington, DC, as needed. Employees are required to reside in the DC Metro regions of Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, DC.
