Job Description

Position Title: Archives Fellow (Part Time)

WHO WE ARE:

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is a federation of 10 Member Societies which together have nearly 120,000 members across the globe. Founded in 1931, AIP is a federation that advances the success of our Member Societies and an institute that engages in research and analysis to empower positive change in the physical sciences. Our overarching strategy is to advance the physical sciences with a unifying voice of strength from diversity.  We want you to become a part of our mission and join our dynamic team!

SUMMARY:

AIP is seeking an Archives Fellow to join our Niels Bohr Library & Archives (NBLA) team in a grant funded initiative to draw attention to the key role that women have played and are playing in advancing the physical sciences by increasing access to archival collections that highlight the contributions and work of women.

The Archives Fellow will collaborate closely with librarians, archivists, historians of science, and science communicators to support and enhance the documentation and visibility of women in the physical sciences. This role involves conducting in-depth oral history interviews with women in science, contributing to the preservation and expansion of underrepresented voices in the historical record. The Fellow will also work to improve the representation of women in the physical sciences on Wikipedia by participating in and supporting edit-a-thon events that enhance content accuracy and visibility. Additionally, the Fellow will showcase the stories and images of women in existing archival collections by writing feature articles for blogs and newsletters and contributing to social media outreach. A key component of the role includes actively encouraging the donation of photographs, biographical materials, and personal narratives—particularly from women in physics, astronomy, and related disciplines—to enrich and diversify the archival record.

Join our team of energized, charismatic, collaborative, and passionate individuals, and contribute to making a difference in the field of physical sciences!

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Engage in collection development activities to support the documentation of women’s contributions to the physical sciences
  • Support outreach and engagement events
  • Promote the project in NBLA communication channels, social media, and other outreach initiatives

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

  • Master of Library and Information Science degree, or currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program in Archival Studies or another relevant field such as history of science, science policy, or similar
  • Demonstrated research skills, as well as skills in written and verbal communication
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines.

TO APPLY:

Include a resume and a cover letter. We encourage you to apply even if your experience does not fully match the position description. At AIP, we embrace considering people from a diversity of backgrounds and career experiences.

COMPENSATION: $26.35 per hour, up to 20 hours per week.

WORKING AT AIP:

AIP embraces a flexible hybrid work environment to balance in-person collaborative work with remote work. The team works in a flexible, hybrid schedule and reports to our offices in College Park, Maryland and Washington, DC, as needed. Employees are required to reside in the DC Metro regions of Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, DC.

Your colleagues at AIP are welcoming, gracious, and eager to help each other succeed. With our commitment to community service, institute-wide social opportunities, and ongoing learning and development, AIP is a rewarding place to work.
